Janet Schwartz & Dave Kaphammer: In Motion, At Rest

On view July 10 through October 29, 2019

Opening Reception: Wednesday, July 17, 2019, 6:00-8:00 PM

This dual-artist exhibition features the recent work of Janet Schwartz and Dave Kaphammer. Taking divergent focuses–Schwartz concentrates on movement and shifting objects, while Kaphammer directs his attention to vehicles in a state of rest–these two artists deliver dynamic work in paint and pastel.

The title of the exhibition reveals itself through the work produced by the two artists. Schwartz derives inspiration from the motion of vehicles and the distortions that may occur through unusual lenses. She focuses on urban and highway landscapes, often through partially obscured views that blur and contort the realities outside. Kaphammer is fascinated by just the opposite and looks to what happens when this motion stops, as these vehicles linger amongst a landscape. With dramatic light and shadowing, he explores a multitude of vehicles, some left in a state of decay.

An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, July 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the Franklin Square Salon Gallery at the Hanover Theatre. Schwartz and Kaphammer will give an artist talk that evening at 6:30 PM. This exhibition will be on view through October 29, 2019.

Schwartz received her Bachelor of Art Education from the Ohio State University and her Masters of Education in Instructional Media from Boston State College. Kaphammer began his formal art education at the Worcester Art Museum and studied under numerous artists. In addition to ArtsWorcester, both are Copley Society of Art members. Schwartz and Kaphammer have taught and exhibited work together and independently throughout New England.

The artist’s reception is open and free to all. Parking for the opening and viewing appointments is available in the City’s Federal Square lot, across Main Street from the Hanover Theatre.

After the reception, free viewings are by appointment through October 29, 2019. To make an appointment, please contact ArtsWorcester at info@artsworcester.org or 508.755.5142.
