Challenge
photography, archival pigment print (framed)

From our ongoing project Self Love Club: I met Sophie at an exhibition of her paintings in ArtsWorcester Gallery, and I was struck by the contrast between her beauty and the self-hatred reflected in her art. I proposed we work together on a project to explore this self-hatred, with my main goal and hope being to show her — and the world — the groundlessness of this hatred, its illegality. Fullness does not detract from beauty; rather, it’s self-hatred that distorts it. This is precisely what I aim to express in my project. The title of the project was inspired by Sophie’s shoulder tattoo: a sarcastic inscription that reads ‘Self Love Club,’ adorned with roses.

Imperfections

What forms our individuality, our uniqueness? What makes us human? Imperfections. Even those whom we consider perfect have their imperfections. Every body has small and large flaws, unevenness, moles and wrinkles, scratches and spots. A person is rough, uneven, in every square centimeter of our skin there is a treasure trove of individuality. My project admires precisely this manifestation of humanity. In our time, when AI can draw any picture, any image, it is especially important for us to emphasize our differences from the ideal, which can be easily counterfeited because everything in it is smooth.

Minds racing a million miles a second, inner dialogues fighting to be heard and hands longing to create. It wasn’t until someone close to me told me that my mind feels things so strongly in order to help me create powerful art pieces, that I felt at peace. Feeling everything all at once is an overwhelming and painful experience, but it has allowed me to create pieces that reflect my inner thoughts and feelings, something I wouldn’t trade for the world.

At the crest of this era shift, where AI displaces the Artist from all the obvious mediums, I’m seeking new methods at the intersection of different forms of visual arts that will allow me to remain competitive for some time against this new challenge for humanity.
