This painting was created on site during a residency program I had taken part in last year. I created 2 pieces. The intimate spot inspired me to paint both representational and abstract forms. I felt a deep engagement with my surroundings sitting in the morning at the edge of the pond. The smells, sounds, light, and colors were intuitively painted on the panel while making specific choices in composition. Truly a delightful time.

On Chincoteague Island in Virginia, wild ponies roam the coast in herds with their young. Many legends convey that the existence of these majestic creatures originated from Spanish shipwrecks that occurred off of the coast of Virginia more than 400 years ago. This capture exemplifies the spirit of these magnificent animals; the herd’s stallion, Legacy, shares a moment with Anne Bonny, the mother of his five-day-old foal. Legacy chooses to bond with Anne Bonny, while their baby stays close to her. This image captures the beauty of nature, the bond between animals, and the essence of family.

“Pond At Snow Farm” was painted on sight on a very warm day in early September. I was interested in the light and heat of the morning using warm and cool colors to express the essence of the area. Using varied brush strokes, washes of color and texture I played with these elements to access the peace and tranquility of the moment.

This artwork emerged during my residency, an immersive journey where intuition guided my creative process. Beginning with charcoal gestures, I embarked without a predetermined path, allowing each stroke to flow organically. Layer by layer, I explored the interplay of paint, making instinctive decisions on their harmonies and contrasts. In this piece, lines and shades converge to initiate a dialogue among figures, each stroke a quiet exchange between forms. Through the fluidity of gesture, I sought to capture the essence of human movement and emotion, inviting viewers into a realm where stories unfold with every curve and contour.

This painting is a an exercise in observation, A still life created in my studio. I feel personally drawn to go back to my core skills of painting light. These onions take on their own personalities and energies that truly come through by the art of seeing. A true joy for me. Henry George Todd’s Study of Strawberries encouraged and inspired me to go back to creating work that stimulates my experience in painting from life.
