Oceanic is part of a mixed media series rooted in automatism—a process of creative freedom and release. I begin by allowing marks to emerge organically, guided by intuition, until narratives reveal themselves. In this piece, I explored the concept of infinite supply and ever-flowing boundlessness. From there, I followed the unfolding patterns, seeking to express the deep interconnectedness that runs through all things.

I’m submitting this piece for the Origin call as it explores the idea of sowing both literal and figurative seeds—legacy. My process begins with automatism, allowing marks to emerge intuitively until narratives take shape. I then refine these narratives with an open-minded approach, uncovering interconnected threads between them. The result is a living narrative, open to interpretation and reinterpretation as it evolves with the viewer.

“Planes of Light” captures my husband as midday reflections carve across his face, throwing highlights and shadows in unexpected directions. A colorful grid nods to the photo that started it all, while gold halo rays lift him beyond the physical. Persis drew me in with its folding colors and hidden planes, reminding me that even in monochrome, depth and movement thrive. 1945 Debutante offered a grounding in classical portraiture, while Blue #1010B inspired the soft edges where form melts into space. Layers of gouache and pencil mirror light’s shifting nature—both tangible and metaphysical, a theme I return to often.
