“Foreigner in Taito” is a play on words, based on a picture of a panda I took while in a zoo in Japan. The panda and I have an immigrant status of permanent resident in common, both in that moment, and after I returned to America. It resonated with me while doing the artwork that neither of us would be home, no matter how much we behaved like it, or how accustomed to the environment we were. I let the panda be the “star,” while all the foreground and background insists on the notion of being an alien.

More directly concerned with the collaborative experience, this piece highlights our opposing points of views, while simultaneously coming together under the same frame. Our motivation for this came from working side by side in a drawing class, which led Ren and I to acknowledging our similar approaches and sensibilities to creating art. We sought out independent study classes for the following semester in order to specifically see what we could come up with between us both, which is where we developed this piece. The broken glass symbolizes shattering norms and bridging the gap between barriers, namely, the 45-year age gap, gender, etc.

Brown Jewel

The glaze used for this vase is called Jewel Brown—hence the title. Out of all the times I used it, this has been its most shiny iteration. I made this textured vase sophomore year of high school, and this nice and lucky outcome stands for me as proof and inspiration to return to pottery as soon as I can.
