…and there was peace

The pictorialism genre is very inspirational to me. Nature is my backyard, the place where I thrive. I was immediately attracted to Fork Shaped Tree by Joyce Tenneson because of its monochrome color and theme. Beauty emanates from the picture as well as a sense of mystery. The natural world is complex and its interactions with us are fraught with misunderstandings. The Fork Shaped Tree reminds us that peace is what humanity needs the most. I work at achieving this feeling in my work.

These collaborative works explore the quality of transformation inherent in death, grief, and rebirth. The images are created by combining two distinct art processes – photography and the mushroom spore print. Borcy and Evers depict the landscape of Mount Auburn Cemetery and its human created statuary together with the regenerative biodiversity of fungi and plants.

When I take (make) a photo, I want the person looking at it to be transported (almost like time travel) onto location. I wish the person (viewer) to be there (on-site) to smell the smells, to hear the sounds (or noises). The photo (story) unfolds before you (the spectator) or better with you (the actor) in a surreal moment. Your presence, your body, but more importantly your soul, but even more importantly your spirit (energy) is there. Photos tell stories, are stories. Your imagination creates them.

A Place of Refuge explores the relationship, via a photographic essay, between humans and plants and trees. Images were made during a year-long project in an indoors room, A Place of Refuge, and for some photos, through the windows, towards the outdoors. As time went by, the observer realized that plants and trees exhibited human-like qualities, primarily the need for connection and being part of a society. In this society, individuals took care of each other and ensured the well being and survival of their species. Nature embodies the example to follow for a harmonious life. Image 1 of 6.
