When you dance, you dance from the inside out. This is a circle dance of women spinning energy all around.

Elemental

This image is created in response to Harvey Sadow’s Fire and Flood/Sacred Sites ceramic piece. Fire and water are the basic elements of life. People from ancient times revered and respected these elements. Today we have fire and flooding challenging us to come to terms with these two basic elements. Women traditionally cared for land and planted and harvested food. This was taken over by men with patriarchy and machines with industrialization. We are on the brink of despair; our earth is being decimated by climate change as fires and floods invade our land relentlessly. Perhaps it is time to give the earth back to women for safekeeping. Returning to the concept of seven generations of care would go a long way with preserving earth for oncoming generations. The shape of the ceramic bowl is reiterated with the curves of the shapes of fire and water, an alchemical process.

My objects are all constructed with Baltic birch plywood and veneered with wood. I do this in a way that allows me to add acrylic color and finishes to create different sheens, opacities and compositions that interact with the natural color and grain of the veneer. I view the wood as a main character and not just a surface for supporting other materials. I use the grain pattern and color to inform the compositions and think of my pieces as a collaboration between the natural qualities of the wood and my artistic expression.

EMERGE. I’ve been on guard, holding back, but now slowly emerging. Though at times, looking from another angle, it appears I’m just receding back again. Covid days/daze have been disorienting.

Crone Robe

I was brought up with my last name Weaver and have always been attracted to images with spiders and spiderwebs. As I am getting older I put together this crone robe and wear it whenever I need to reacquaint myself with my spider beginnings and the interconnectedness of life.

Feast or Famine
Inspired by: Paul Quain, Loading Cattle, Aran
archival inkjet print

The collage brings up the question about who exactly is invited to the feast, and who exactly gets to attend the lavish banquet. While some may be sitting down ready to begin their many courses of sumptuous food, others are fighting the beast of hunger as it marks its next victim. The have’s and the have-nots are increasingly evident on our globe today. ‘Loading Cattle’ Native Americans starved to death when cattle replaced the great buffalo. Buffalo meat is sustainable, healthy, and important to the culture of the people of the Great Plains.
