Cate Smith

sculpture, mixed media

As a installation artist and sculptor, I make work about current events that I also have a personal connection to or feel very strongly about. I generally have three or four projects going at the same time in a variety of media. I may be hooking a rug, fabricating a chair out of wood, pop riveting tin cans, or creating large figures in clay. Recently, I have created a series of whales made out of plastic that I spent a year saving up. This ongoing project includes a three-dimensional whale stitched together out of clear heavy plastic from used food containers. I received an MFA in sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and subsequently taught at a college in Michigan for twenty years. I’ve exhibited at the Mattress Factory, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, SPACES, the Flint Institute of Art, and numerous colleges and galleries. I currently reside in Worcester, MA where I maintain a studio and work as a full-time artist.
