/THE FAIRY TALE THAT WAS NOT TOLD
(OTHERWORLDLY FAMILY ALBUM)
Mari Saxon
Artist Shoeboxes
January 16 - February 16, 2025
/STATEMENT
Mari Saxon’s fantastical photographs are all portraits of herself and her daughters, made in her tiny attic studio. Individually and as a collection, these photographs illustrate a surreal fairytale that has not yet been written.
Saxon is inspired by folk tales and surrealism in both literature and fine art. Her photographs feature dramatic lighting, creative character-building, and countless details that lead the viewer to ask questions. What is the child whispering to the doll? Who is this woman with six legs? Where are these odd characters? Saxon purposefully leaves her photos open-ended, and instead of assigning each piece a “true meaning,” encourages each viewer to create their own stories.
