Since my work predominately uses wood, I have long thought about the sustainability of this material and as such, only use renewable, responsibly sourced wood and veneer. I usually fabricate my wall pieces so the wood grain is undisturbed in order to create a harmonious backdrop for adding acrylic paint. However with this piece I’ve decided to create a subtly disjointed canvas by altering grain directions which I hope hints at the oft-obscured realities of using such materials and the reverberations felt by our environment.

Creating self-portraits offers artists valuable opportunities for introspection. Who we are is a very important part of what we have to say and how we say it. I consider this form of self-examination to be a critical part of my growth as an artist. Through the creation of various self-portraits I have been able to explore style and medium as I attempt to animate emotionally charged inner truths.

Tiny Secrets

My objects are all constructed with Baltic birch plywood and veneered with wood. I do this in a way that allows me to add acrylic color and finishes to create different sheens, opacities and compositions that interact with the natural color and grain of the veneer. I view the wood as a main character and not just a surface for supporting other materials. I use the grain pattern and color to inform the compositions and think of my pieces as a collaboration between the natural qualities of the wood and my artistic expression.

My work is about perception. It’s about how it takes time and investigation to understand. It’s about questioning our initial notion and avoiding the pitfalls of ignorance/arrogance. It’s about meditating on something to practice the art of observation. It’s about not knowing everything. It’s about removing filters from our senses and letting them guide us to a dispassionate realization. And ultimately it’s about learning how to recognize balance and harmony.

My work is about wood and its interaction with shape and color. My forms are constructed with Baltic birch plywood and then veneered with wood. I then add paint in ways that compliment the qualities of the veneer while respecting its innate natural traits.

My paintings are constructed with Baltic birch plywood and then veneered. I do this in a way that allows me to add color, mediums and finishes to create different sheens, opacities and compositions that interact with the color and grain of the veneer. I view the veneer as a main character and not just a surface for supporting other materials. I think of my pieces as a collaboration between the wood and my artistic expression and choose pieces of veneer that speak to my sensibilities and often join veneer in various ways to highlight parts that are especially interesting.
