Each “Book Sculpture” is a structure where the chosen book is the impetus and main structural base of that sculpture. Color and image choices evolve from the selected book on its use in that work.

printed collaged images on sculptural vintage plaster mannequin
19″ x 13″ x 6″
2025
I was first drawn to Constance Bigelow’s “Debutante (1945)” because one of the images on my sculpture is a similar portrait from a 1945 photo, after WWII. The stance, dresses, flowers, expression are alike. The 2nd work referenced is Kenro Izu’s Blue #1010B which mimics my use of variations of indigo and also echoes the use of the female figure. The third reference is Shelley Reed’s Predator/Prey, which uses only circles to convey the subject matter. There are some circle cutout shapes, on mine, that depict a zebra, an orchid, etc. and they all have to do with animals/nature.

Inspired by: Esther Solondz, Untitled (Rust Portrait)
acrylic paint on found mannequin with metal
36″ x 7″
2018
The self portrait “Francine” is painted on a found vintage mannequin arm to resemble a tattoo. It also has an attached metal bracelet with a lock. I think this work connects with the Esther Solondz portrait that was created by rust. The blue coloration in my portrait and the metal bracelet evoke oxidation which can be a result of being exposed to the elements and being outside. Both portraits are done on alternative surfaces.

Bill
acrylic paint on found suitcase
17″ x 14″ x 12″
2022
The suitcase is an extension of an ongoing project that deals with dresses having an image painted on each one. The symbols depict a person who maybe famous for their involvement in the arts, contemporary culture, science, history etc. This particular one is referencing Bill Bowerman, the original founder and innovator of Nike. I happened to find the suitcase at an antique show and the interior pink silky fabric is the exact color of some of the dresses that I work on. The painted symbol is always an indigo color similar to tattoos.
