Why Pickles?

Acrylic painting on canvas

18″ x 24″

2023

Despite my strong dislike for pickles, I started a pickle series to explore the reasons behind my choice of subject. As I witnessed the widespread excitement for the food, I studied their shapes, forms, and brands through the series, developing a newfound appreciation. Through painting them, I challenged personal preferences, highlighting the importance of venturing beyond comfort zones and reevaluating what we originally dislike. By doing so, I aim to inspire others to find enjoyment in unexpected places and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of art and the overlooked beauty within things we do not always value.

Embrace

mixed media acrylic painting on canvas

38″ x 38″

2023

Embrace is a mixed media bricolage painting that underlines the importance and power of love and belonging. The abstract space surrounding the central figures is composed of materials such as plastic bags, bubble wrap and written notes that have the purpose of holding or protecting. The figures in the center collaborate with the material to depict the time when I was adopted from China and was given the privilege to experience embrace without question of my background or identity. I embraced these disregarded materials and transformed them into a visual surface changing their narrative.

What is Confidence?

graphite on Canson edition paper

22″ x 30″

2022

In this graphite drawing, I challenged what we define as confidence and question what it truly is. Is confidence purely visual? Can you be confident without “looking” confident? In my final piece for my figuration drawing class, I investigated these questions by depicting two figures in the same setting but in different seated positions. With the blank environment, both figures are isolated in their own spaces to show how confidence is internal and personal. Though one figure may look more confident than the other, the viewer does not truly know if one, both, or any figure is truly confident.

Slow Down

acrylic painting on mixed media paper

11.5″ x 16.5″

2024

“Slow Down” is an acrylic painting on paper that shows my practice of finding joy and celebration in the moment. This piece invites viewers to focus on spending more time intentionally, recognizing the profound value in simple acts. The slowness of peeling an orange, the patience in making homemade marmalade, the care in hand-picking flowers, and the ritual of steeping tea—all reflect a deliberate pace. Through this painting, I aim to celebrate the beauty in life’s small, often overlooked details, encouraging a mindful appreciation of each moment and a deeper connection to our everyday experiences.
